Russian authorities suspended flights and imposed airport restrictions in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug on Wednesday morning over alleged drone threats.In response, restrictions were imposed at Igrim, Nyagan, Uray, Sovetsky Tyumenskaya, Surgut, and Khanty-Mansiysk airports, Russian state media RIA Novosti reported.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official.The region sits over 1,800 kilometers (1,118 miles) from the Ukrainian border, about on par with some of Ukraine’s longest known strikes on the Tyumen oil refinery in a neighboring region.The region is also responsible for around 40% of Russia’s crude production, according to Russian outlet Vertska on Monday.The outlet also noted that the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region has never been subjected to a drone strike, same for drone warnings starting in May.The same report on Tuesday, two days before the airport restrictions, also said that regional authorities sought to amend the laws on drone threats by reclassifying them as “extreme life situations,” listing them alongside fires, natural disasters, “man-made explosions,” and loss of livelihoods.Vertska noted that the changes would allow residents affected by drone strikes to receive hot meals, monthly food packages, clothing, and footwear from authorities.Ukraine’s shift from strikes on refineries to crude productionWarnings of potential strikes on Russia’s largest crude-producing region suggest Kyiv may be stepping up its drone campaign.In summer 2026, Kyiv hit almost, if not all, Russian refineries within range, with its military claiming in July that 43% of Russia’s refining capacity had been knocked offline as a result.
