Comments come after Germany and other 'frugals' called for major cuts to Brussels' €1.8 trillion proposal

Spain has expressed concern about the current debate over the EU budget, as capitals race to clinch a deal on the €1.8 trillion cash pot by the end of 2026.

“I’m worried about the discussion on the MFF, to be honest,” Carlos Cuerpo, Spain’s finance minister, said in Brussels on Wednesday, referring to the Multiannual Financial Framework, the formal name for the EU’s seven-year budget.

“Everyone understands the need for more investment, both public and private, both at the national and at the EU level,” he added.

“But when it comes to discussing the extent and the ambition of the common budget, we somehow go back or revert to previous discussions where we want to limit [its] size.”
