The operator of a five-storey building in Satya Niketan being used as paying guest accommodation, which collapsed on Sunday killing seven persons, has been arrested, PTI reported on Wednesday.Sudhanshu, who ran the “Hostel Daze” paying guest accommodation, is being questioned after his arrest, the news agency quoted unidentified officials as saying. He and his business partner, Shubham Tyagi, had leased the property from its owner in August 2025. Tyagi is absconding.Sudhanshu’s arrest is the fifth in the case. The building’s owner, Hari Ram, his son Mahesh, his wife Urmila and labour contractor Saroj were arrested earlier, The Indian Express reported.Five municipal officials have also been suspended.The building was reportedly 40 to 50 years old, and repair work was underway in the basement when it collapsed.An unidentified police officer said that the owners allegedly knew that the building would not be able to bear the weight of four additional floors and still decided to lease it out to be used as a paying guest accommodation, The Indian Express reported.Meanwhile, the police are investigating whether the Hostel Daze operators had conducted due diligence to ensure that the building was safe for occupation.They are also examining the rent agreement under which the accommodation was let out to the tenants, PTI reported.The agreement stated that the operators would not be responsible for any “casualties or risk” to tenants.It also reportedly stated that the hostel would not be liable to pay compensation for personal injury, or loss of or damage to belongings caused by circumstances beyond its control, including sealing, fire, earthquakes and heavy rain.Edited by Neerad Pandharipande.
