President Donald Trump reiterated his suggestion that New Mexico should be renamed “New America” on Monday, posting seven times about the issue in the span of an hour in a Labor Day Truth Social spree—despite state leaders rejecting the idea.

Trump posted a series of maps showing New Mexico renamed as “New America.”
Trump on Sunday also posted an AI-generated video of himself pasting an “America” sticker over “Mexico” on a sign welcoming visitors to the state and a map with “Mexico” crossed out of the state’s name and replaced with “America,” which the White House reshared the image on its X account.
Democratic leaders in the state blasted the suggestion: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said, “New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate—it’s been ours since before the United States existed,” and accused the president of trying to “distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran.”
