On Tuesday, XPeng announced that its automated production line for humanoid robots had begun operations. The first IRON humanoid robot completed the automated final assembly process and autonomously walked off the production line, marking the company’s move from the R&D stage toward mass production.

XPeng said IRON is the world’s first high-level general-purpose humanoid robot to be produced on an automated production line.

The production line was designed and built by XPeng’s own team. According to the company, it incorporates manufacturing and quality-control systems developed for the automotive industry, while adapting them to the precision and flexibility required for humanoid robot assembly. More than 80% of the line’s core processes are automated, XPeng said.

Humanoid robots are still in the early stages of commercialization, with most products yet to reach large-scale production and manufacturing processes still involving significant amounts of manual assembly.

Automated production lines could improve manufacturing efficiency and product consistency while providing a foundation for scaling output. However, humanoid robots involve a large number of precision components and complex mechanical systems, meaning automotive manufacturing practices cannot be directly applied in every aspect. The actual efficiency and cost of mass production remain to be tested.
