Mezie was arrested by officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Rivers State Police Command on Friday, September 4, 2026, at about 3pm, reportedly at the instance of CP Adewole.
The Rivers State Police Command has said it is not aware of the arrest of human rights activist and public affairs commentator, Onwuka Chimezie, popularly known as Mezie, who was reportedly arrested by police operatives over comments concerning allegations of land grabbing involving the state Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju Adewole.
The command also said it was not aware of the allegations of land grabbing and alleged support for land grabbers levelled against the police commissioner, adding that the matter is currently being handled by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID) in Abuja.
