BOSTON — Garrett Crochet suited up in his full Boston Red Sox home white uniform Tuesday, roughly four hours before first pitch, and trotted out to the bullpen where he threw 20 pitches. The first game of the American League wild-card series begins three weeks from Tuesday (likely in New York for the Red Sox) and Crochet is hoping to be there. He won’t be the Game 1 starter like last season, but he’s hoping to make enough progress in the next 21 days to join the team as a reliever. Tuesday’s session, his second bullpen in the last four days, was a step in that direction.“It’s exciting,” pitching coach Andrew Bailey said before Boston’s 6-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. “Obviously anytime you can add Garrett Crochet into the mix is going to be huge for the team. With what he’s been through this season, he is doing really well and just continues to progress.”The 27-year-old has been on the injured list since April 26 with shoulder inflammation, a nagging injury that has wiped out almost his entire season thanks to several setbacks. Because of that, the Red Sox are trying not to get their hopes up about what adding Crochet to their bullpen mix might mean for October. Nevertheless, it’s a tantalizing thought.“If Garrett Crochet looks like Garrett Crochet and he’s healthy and able to go out there and pitch,” interim manager Chad Tracy said, “that helps any team.”
