CHICAGO — September was supposed to bring answers for the Cubs bullpen. A little over a week into the month, there are only more questions for the group. In a game with the constant tension of the playoffs, it seemed like the Cubs were going to eke out a nice win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. After Carson Kelly doubled in two to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead in the top half of the frame, Jacob Webb retired the first two batters of the ninth inning. Then Christian Yelich lined a single to right field and up came Jackson Chourio. The young left fielder fouled off the first pitch he saw, then rocketed the next one from Webb at 109.8 mph, 394 feet to left field to tie the game. The Cubs would go on to lose 4-3 in extras, falling to 81-65 on the season and remaining a half game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the top wild-card spot.“Just poor location, man,” a clearly frustrated Webb said after the loss. “Poor location, that’s purely it.”Manager Craig Counsell said Webb’s offspeed pitches have hurt him of late. This time it was his changeup, a pitch that had been his best offering all season long.“We made a bad pitch,” Counsell said. “We made a pitch with a man on base. It’s the one thing that can’t happen there, and unfortunately it happened.”
