President Donald Trump is escalating the trade war with Canada, with the United States set to ban imports of Canadian dairy products, motorcycles and alcoholic beverages while imposing tariffs of up to 50% on a broader range of Canadian goods.
The White House said the import bans will take effect September 29. Trump has also ordered a 50% tariff on additional Canadian products, including mattresses, motorboats and golf carts, beginning September 15.
The latest measures follow Canada’s decision on Monday to impose retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on roughly USD20 billion worth of US goods. Ottawa’s move came after Washington last month introduced 50% tariffs on selected Canadian imports, further intensifying tensions between the two neighboring economies.
The White House said the decision to restrict Canadian alcohol imports was partly driven by provincial governments removing US wines and spirits from store shelves as part of a broader boycott of American products. Trump has described the measures as discriminatory.
A senior administration official told reporters that the president’s actions are intended to protect US producers and discourage further retaliation.
