Potterheads are analysing the new Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone series under a microscope. Every frame of the recently released trailer is paused, compared and dissected. For those of us who grew up with the Harry Potter books and movies, HBO’s series is a Herculean task. We are not simply revisiting our childhood, but reinterpreting it.
When the trailer opens with Hermione asking, “Did you love summer reading?”, it felt familiar. Then comes the sorting ceremony, as Harry puts on the Sorting Hat and is placed in Gryffindor, sending the Great Hall into applause. We have seen this moment before, but it carries a new energy with familiarity, while the richer visuals, polished VFX and immersive world make it feel fresh. After watching the trailer, I have but one thought: this series might actually be very good.Potterheads have spent their childhoods wanting to know more about the Wizarding World. We hoped that one day the Hogwarts admission letter would arrive at home. It never did (and we still blame Indian Post for losing it). Instead, the films became part of our life, a ritual. During school holidays, college breaks and eventually Christmas, returning to Hogwarts is a tradition.
