The story so far: Chongtham Vikram Singh, a prolific musician from Imphal in Manipur, was assaulted and killed by a group of men in Delhi’s Ashram area on Sunday night (September 6, 2026) after he objected to their loud noise. The police have arrested seven men and a 15-year-old boy for the killing, which the Delhi police are investigating as a case of mob lynching.Condolences over the killing and concerns about the safety of people from the northeast have poured in since then, urging the government and society at large not to look at this incident as an isolated one but to view it in the context of the widespread discrimination that communities from northeast India face in other parts of the country.What do we know about why he was attacked?According to the Delhi police, Singh had objected to loud noises coming from the dhabas near his home in the Ashram area, and this is the reason they attacked him. According to Singh’s family members, he had stepped out of their home on Sunday night after dinner, and the next thing they heard was him being chased up the stairs by a group of allegedly inebriated men.In the police complaint, Singh’s 20-year-old son, Yaiphaba, said that his father told him that he knew some of his attackers. Yaiphaba explained in his statement to the police that his father told him that some of his attackers had previously also “threatened him” when he had objected to the noise they were making.Singh was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Okhla the night of the assault. He succumbed to his injuries the next day, after which he was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for a post-mortem. The police have said that they have registered the FIR in the case under the section for mob lynching and are investigating the case.
