Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge was on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. Justice Ghuge was administered the oath of office by West Bengal Governor R.N. RaviJustice Ghuge was elevated as a Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013. He was appointed acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on June 1, 2026.Before the elevation of Justice Ghuge, Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court after the retirement of former Chief Justice Sujoy Paul on June 20."The Calcutta High Court has a glorious tradition of rendering justice without fear or favour, the bar of this court is renowned across the country for its erudition, its fierce independence, and its rich argumentative traditions. The bench and the bar are the two wheels of the golden chariot of justice. I look forward to working hand in hand with my sister and brother judges and this vibrant bar to ensure that this chariot moves smoothly and fairly," said Justice Ghuge addressing the event.He also emphasised that there was a need to embrace modern technology to make courts more accessible and transparent and to make justice available to marginalised sections of society.
