Iran’s foreign ministry has condemned a US attack on Iranian commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman on Saturday.

In a statement, the ministry said the strikes were “a continuation of the US military aggression against Iran”, adding that it constituted a "clear violation" of a clause in the "United Nations Charter, a war crime, and an overt threat to international peace and the security of commercial shipping".

The ministry asserted that Tehran remains determined to "firmly defend its sovereignty and national interests" against US actions, including Washington's ongoing maritime blockade, attacks on commercial vessels, and its continued "economic war".

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that responsibility for the consequences arising from the continuation of US aggressive and interventionist actions in the region will rest with the US regime and its accomplices and partners," it added.
