The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested about 20 persons in connection with Monday’s protest in Sokoto over the court-ordered remand of Islamic cleric, Dahiru Mai Barewa.
The protesters were arrested after the demonstration demanding Mai Barewa’s release reportedly turned violent, with some youths allegedly attacking security personnel and attempting to force their way into custody to secure his release.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the arrests while speaking with our correspondent on Tuesday.
He said the suspects had been charged to court.
“About 20 persons were arrested in connection with the protest, and they have been charged to court,” Rufai said.
