The US destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island, after Iran's Revolutionary Guard attacked a US warship.
Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at a US military base near Al Azraq, Jordan, according to an IRGC statement carried on state media.
Crews were warned to abandon their vessels before US forces struck and rendered the Iranian tankers inoperable, Central Command said.
Oil prices approached $100 a barrel, with Brent crude exceeding $99, as the renewed exchange of strikes escalated tensions.
