…Party condemns alleged attack by suspected thugs, says obstruction of visit to massacre victims is unacceptable
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the reported obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State to commiserate with victims and families affected by the killings in Yelwata community.
Osa Director, NDC national publicity secretary, in a statement issued on September 7, 2026, alleged that suspected hired thugs blocked Obi’s convoy and prevented him from entering Yelwata, where more than 270 people were reportedly massacred.
The NDC further alleged that the group was led by an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.
According to the party, the incident occurred despite Obi’s stated intention to visit the affected community to mourn with grieving families, listen to victims and express solidarity with those affected by the violence.
