Notre Dame will be without safety Brauntae Johnson for perhaps a month after the the All-American suffered a foot injury during the first half of Sunday night’s win over Wisconsin. Johnson watched the second half of that 41-13 win from the sidelines with his left foot in a walking boot.Head coach Marcus Freeman did not say Johnson underwent surgery but revealed Johnson will be out “for a couple weeks” at least. Johnson missed most of his freshman season with a foot injury and missed the final two games of last season with a hand injury. The Irish also lost starting defensive tackle Jason Onye to a left ankle sprain. The sixth-year senior is also expected to miss multiple games.“We expect them back at some point in the season, but they’re not going to get back next week,” Freeman said. “It’s going to a couple weeks. And so that’s why you have depth, right?”Losing Johnson removes the second-best player from Notre Dame’s secondary, with the Fort Wayne, Ind., product behind only cornerback Leonard Moore. The Athletic’s Dan Brugler slotted Johnson as his No. 20 prospect in his early NFL Draft rankings for next spring, meaning the safety rated ahead of CJ Carr, Anthonie Knapp and Boubacar Traore among the Irish players listed. Moore ranked No. 2 overall.
With Notre Dame All-American Brauntae Johnson out with injury, where do Irish turn?
Without Johnson on Sunday against Wisconsin, the Irish turned to Luke Talich in the starting lineup next to Adon Shuler.
