Veteran GOP strategist Karl Rove admitted on Tuesday that he is “a little bit nervous” about this week’s Republican midterm convention, noting the dangers of his party members betting on President Donald Trump.“I’m a little bit nervous about it because, look, we’re in the final stages of the campaign,” Rove said on Fox News. “I’d be more comfortable if this had been held in June or July and set a thematic that could be pursued for four months or five months rather than for 56 days.”While traditional party conventions are held during a presidential election year to nominate candidates, this year’s Republican convention, set to begin Wednesday in Dallas, is being held ahead of November’s midterm elections.The convention will be centered on Trump and his agenda. Some Republicans are reportedly skipping out for a variety of reasons, including the required $25,000 contribution to attend. Rove’s remarks come a week after he issued Republicans a warning in The Wall Street Journal, telling them that making their campaigns all about Trump, whose approval ratings are dropping, will likely backfire. He wrote in the journal: “Republican candidates will constantly have to fend off questions about whether they agree with his latest insult or half-baked idea. The narrative won’t be on anything positive about them or the GOP.”Rove told the Fox News anchors on Tuesday that “the White House is pushing a big bet” as Trump’s presidency is increasingly becoming even more unpopular among Americans. “It’s like we’re at the tables; they’re pushing all the chips on, saying we, if we make this about Donald Trump, and if we make it about Donald Trump’s record and put him at the center of this, then we’ve got a shot to pull this thing off,” Rove said.
