The Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) have intensified efforts to deepen legislative cooperation and build a more coordinated African voice in global affairs.
The move followed discussions in Arusha, Tanzania, between the two regional legislative institutions as part of a three-day working visit by Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, to the headquarters of the East African Community (EAC).
The visit, hosted by Joseph Ntakirutimana, Speaker of EALA, and Alex Obatre, Clerk of the Assembly, focused on strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and developing structured mechanisms for cooperation among regional and supranational legislative institutions across Africa.
A key outcome of the engagement was the presentation of a joint Concept Note proposing the establishment of a Network of Regional and Supranational Parliamentary Institutions.
The proposed network is seeking to bring together major African parliamentary bodies, including the ECOWAS Parliament, EALA and the Pan-African Parliament, to create a sustained platform for the exchange of legislative experience, technical expertise and institutional best practices.
