It’s way too early in the college football season for any player to make a Heisman Trophy statement, but Darian Mensah sure made a good first impression in Miami’s season-opening win at Stanford.The former Tulane and Duke quarterback went 27-for-30 to finish with 401 yards and five passing touchdowns in Miami’s 45-6 win. Sure, Stanford is one of the biggest long shots to win the ACC, but those numbers approach perfection.Mensah was among the top handful of favorites entering the season. Miami looked good in Northern California. The Hurricanes racked up 549 yards of total offense — and 234 of those went to wide receiver Malachi Toney. Toney caught three of Mensah’s five touchdowns to also rise up the oddsboard. FanDuel has Toney at +1250 to win the award and DraftKings has him at +1300. That means Miami has two players in the top seven of the odds.There’s always concern that teammates who are Heisman candidates could split votes among themselves. Both are known names in the sport and are starring on a Miami team that is a heavy favorite to win the ACC. In Week 2, the Hurricanes play Thursday against Florida A&M in a game that likely won’t move the odds much for either player.Arch Manning is still second in the odds after throwing for four touchdowns in a 59-7 Texas win against Texas State.
