Tamil Nadu stands fourth place in number of e-vehicles registered in all India Level

Over 1.90 lakh electric vehicles (transport and non-transport) were registered in Tamil Nadu in 2025-26 up from 1.37 lakh in 2024-25, as per the Policy note on Motor Vehicles Act - Administration, tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday by TN Transport minister A Vijay Tamilan Parthiban. This is a robust 38 per cent growth over the 1,37,697 e-vehicles registered in 2024-25.92 per cent of the e-vehicles (defined as battery operated vehicles) registered in 2025-26 are in the non-transport vehicles category. A total of 5,52,214 e-vehicles are registered in the state cumulatively over the years, the data shows.“An amount of ₹1011 crore in tax has been exempted for the registration of e-vehicles in 2025-26,” the minister said.Fourth HighestTamil Nadu stands fourth place in number of e-vehicles registered in all India Level. The State has provided 100 per cent exemption from Motor Vehicles Tax for both Transport and Non-Transport Battery Operated Vehicles (BoVs), which is applicable up to December 31, 2027 .Separately, the Transport Department Policy Note 2026-27, also tabled on Tuesday, showed that a revenue of ₹12,503 crore has been collected during the year 2025-26, a 12.7 per cent growth over 2024-25.This includes fees and taxes collected for various services rendered, compounding fees, penalties imposed for violations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and surcharges, green taxes, road safety taxes and service charges levied on each transaction.“During the year 2025-26, a total of 13.76 lakh Learner’s Licences and 9.01 lakh Fresh Driving Licences were issued. The cumulative number of Driving Licences issued in TN is 2.79 crore as on April 1, 2026,” the minister said, speaking about the overall driving license footprint of TN.Published on September 8, 2026
