Holidaymakers across the UK face continuing chaos at airports on Wednesday after an air traffic control failure on Tuesday saw planes grounded.
The UK’s National Air Traffic Services (Nats) said it had fixed a “technical issue” with its flight processing system by late Tuesday afternoon, but there were still “difficulties for the whole aviation network, from which it will take time to recover” – meaning more cancellations and delays are expected on Wednesday.
Some passengers were forced to sleep on the floor overnight at Heathrow as they waited for new flights or information, with nearby hotels filling up with those quick enough to make a booking.
The reason for the problem is subject to a “thorough” investigation, but Nats chief executive, Martin Rolfe, has ruled out a cyber attack as the cause.
