An attack on the convoy of Peter Obi, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, in Benue State has raised fresh security concerns for opposition leaders ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The incident occurred while Obi was travelling to Makurdi, drawing widespread condemnation from political stakeholders. Security analysts and civic groups are now urging federal authorities to investigate the attack promptly and guarantee safety and freedom of movement for all political figures as campaign tensions escalate.
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, his running mate, who expressed concern over the incident, described the alleged mobilisation of people to obstruct Obi’s convoy and prevent his entry into Makurdi as a disturbing development for Nigeria’s democracy.
According to Kwankwaso, the incident raises questions about the growing political tensions accompanying early electioneering activities across the country, particularly as political parties and their supporters intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Authorities must remember that the constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of movement,” Kwankwaso said, stressing that the right should apply to Obi as a former governor and a leading opposition figure.
