More than 1,100 jobs are at risk as Sibanye-Stillwater considers restructuring its Kwezi shaft in Rustenburg.
More than 1,100 jobs are at risk at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Rustenburg operations as the mining group considers restructuring its Kwezi shaft amid declining production and dwindling economically mineable reserves.
Sibanye-Stillwater has entered into a formal Section 189A consultation process with organised labour and affected non-unionised employees regarding the proposed restructuring of the shaft, which could affect 781 Sibanye employees and 333 contractor employees.
The company stressed that no final decision had been made and that the consultation process would consider measures to avoid or minimise job losses, mitigate the impact on affected workers and explore alternatives to improve the shaft’s viability.
Kwezi is a mature underground platinum group metals (PGM) operation within Sibanye’s Rustenburg complex in North West. Mining at the shaft has reached the limits of its approved mining licence area, bringing it closer to the end of its economic life.
