Home favorite Coco Gauff and world No. 2 Elena Rybakina advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals Monday, while China’s Zheng Qinwen produced another remarkable comeback to upset six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.
Top-seeded Alexander Zverev also moved into the quarterfinals, beating Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The German was surprised to finish his match before midnight after being pushed through a pair of five-setters earlier in the tournament.
“I think after 10 hours on court, I just maybe found my rhythm a little bit better, which is helpful because the first two matches were really not great level,” Zverev said. “I think I’m going in the right direction, moving forward in the right direction.”
Zverev, who is seeking his second Grand Slam title after winning the French Open in June, also avenged his earlier loss to Darderi at the Italian Open in Rome this year.
Fourth-seeded Gauff outclassed compatriot Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 to set up a clash with fellow French Open champion Mirra Andreeva for a place in the semifinals.
