The national average for regular unleaded reached $4.15 a gallon on Monday, topping the previous Labor Day record of $3.82 set in 2012

Gas prices hit a record high for Labor Day weekend, with the national average for regular unleaded reaching $4.15 a gallon on Monday, according to AAA. That surpasses the old holiday benchmark of $3.82 a gallon from Sept. 3, 2012, and marks the first Labor Day in history with pump prices above the $4 threshold.
Diesel prices also reached a record, with AAA reporting a Monday average of $5.90 a gallon, up from $3.71 at this point last year. Regular gas is up roughly 30% from the $3.20 a gallon drivers were paying at this time last year.
