The Belgrade funeral for war criminal Ratko Mladić contradicts “the values underpinning Serbia’s path towards the European Union,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Tuesday.
Several Serbian ministers and military leaders attended the ceremony honoring Mladić, who died on Aug. 27 while serving a life sentence for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Porfirije, a close ally of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, led the service and said Mladić’s name “would remain in the memory and prayers of the Serbian people.”
Mladić was the commander of the Bosnian Serb Army during the 1992-95 Bosnian War and was found responsible for the Srebrenica genocide, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed in July 1995.
