Apple has prepared to enter the foldable smartphone market with a device expected to cost more than $2,000 (N2.64 million) which puts the newly appointed chief executive, John Ternus, under pressure to convince consumers that the premium price is justified.

The company is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone at its September 9 product event, which marks one of the biggest changes to the iPhone line since its launch nearly two decades ago.

The device is also expected to be among the first major products introduced under Ternus, who became Apple’s chief executive on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook.

The foldable iPhone has reportedly been in development for several years as Apple seeks to enter a category pioneered by rivals including Samsung and Huawei.

The company’s strategy appears to be to enter the market later but with a more refined product, rather than being among the first manufacturers to launch a foldable smartphone.
