The Australian government plans to introduce draft legislation this week giving social media users the ability to switch off the algorithms companies use to decide what information they see.
Users could potentially opt to see a simple chronological feed of posts only from users they follow, officials said.
The proposed “digital duty of care” laws aim more broadly to bring in “basic safety protections” for the industry, including protecting young users from harmful content, said communications minister Anika Wells.
