THE woman who reported that a baby girl was left abandoned in a box last month in South Oropouche is expected to face the court charged with two offences.The 23-year-old who is related to the child, was yesterday expected to be charged with wasteful employment of police time after allegedly making a false report, and cruelty towards a child.Back on August 20, the woman went to the Oropouche Police Station with the child wrapped in a blanket, and told officers that she found the baby inside a black plastic bag in a cardboard box.She claimed that around 12.15 p.m. she was walking along St Mary’s Road, South Oropouche, near a primary school, when she noticed a cardboard box at the side of the road. She said she heard a baby crying, and saw the newborn inside a plastic bag in the box, with the umbilical cord still attached.She took the child to the home of a 47-year-old man in St Mary’s Village before they went to the police station with the baby girl.Police sources reported investigators subsequently questioned her about the circumstances surrounding the child’s discovery and she eventually admitted that she was related to the child. The development has raised questions about the circumstances in which the baby was left at the roadside and whether the woman’s actions amount to a criminal offence.Officers took the infant to the Point Fortin Hospital and a paediatrician’s examinations found that the girl was about three to four days old, and in good health. The Children’s Authority became involved in the case, and the child has since been in the care of the State.
