Water released into Harangi canals for semi-dry crops

Water will be released through the Harangi Right Bank Canal and Left Bank Canal under the rotational irrigation system until November 30.

The Water Resources Department has begun releasing water into the Harangi reservoir canals under a rotational irrigation system for semi-dry crops from September 1.The decision to release water for Kharif crops in the Harangi Command Area follows a decision taken at a recent meeting of the Harangi Reservoir Irrigation Advisory Committee in Bengaluru, chaired by Agriculture Minister and Kodagu district in-charge Minister P.M. Narendraswamy.According to a statement, water will be released through the Harangi Right Bank Canal and Left Bank Canal under the rotational irrigation system until November 30. The decision was taken taking into account the present storage level in the reservoir and the expected inflow from September to November, based on the minimum inflow recorded over the past 20 years.“Under this system, water will be supplied for 20 days a month and stopped for the remaining 10 days,” said Harangi Reservoir Superintendent Engineer Satish, who is also the Member Secretary of the Harangi Irrigation Advisory Committee.Mr. Satish, however, clarified that the water should be used only for Kharif semi-dry crops.He said the water release schedule would be revised if the inflow into the reservoir declines. He urged farmers in the Harangi Command Area to cooperate with the irrigation department authorities.Farmers have also been requested not to cultivate long-duration paddy and sugarcane crops.
