The Kerala Police have registered against 2,799 people for driving under the influence of alcohol during a Statewide special enforcement drive aimed at improving road safety. The licenses of 884 offenders have been recommended for cancellation.The special drive, titled Drive Sober - Stay Alive, was conducted across the State from August 29 to September 4 under the leadership of the Traffic and Road Safety Management wing of the Kerala Police. As many as 81,565 vehicles were inspected during the operation.An advisory observed that driving under the influence of alcohol is a major cause of road accidents and fatalities and poses a serious risk to all road users. The special drive was carried out to identify drunk drivers and create greater awareness about the potentially fatal consequences of driving after consuming alcohol.Highway patrol units across the State have been instructed to continue regular inspections in the coming days and take stringent action against repeat offenders.The Statewide enforcement campaign was conducted under the supervision of the Traffic Zonal Superintendents of Police, with the active participation of district traffic nodal officers and traffic enforcement units.The police have also urged the public to report traffic violations through ‘Shubhayatra,’ the road safety initiative of the Traffic and Road Safety Management wing.
