The Institute of Foundation Models, a research organisation based in the United Arab Emirates, has released a family of AI models that provide weights as well as source code, training data and methodologies, in an effort to push back the frontiers of openness in AI development.

The move goes beyond the open-weight approach used by major models developed in China, in which models can be downloaded and customised, but companies don’t reveal source code or training methods.

The K2 Horizon family of six models ranges from a 900 million-parameter model for smart watches and other power-constrained devices to the largest with 375 billion parameters.
