The book Rhodanie urbaine, edited by Prof. Emmanuel Rey of the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST), is published today by MétisPresses. To celebrate its publication, a book launch event will take place on 23 September 2026 at f’ar – forum d’architectures de Lausanne, as part of the Rhône Vivant!exhibition. The event will feature presentations by Laurent Allemann, Sara Formery, Bertrand Stofleth and Prof. Emmanuel Rey, who will explore selected aspects of the book, highlighting the Rhône as a driver of urbanity and a catalyst for resilience.Reflecting territorial, regional and local questions raised by the past and future development of its river, the Rhône territory is today facing numerous transformations. Environmental, climatic, landscape, urban planning, architectural, technical, economic and socio-cultural in nature, these challenges define the notion of Rhodanie urbaine and raise fundamental questions about the transformation of urban sites along the Rhône. In this context, underused sites such as riverside brownfields and activity zones approaching obsolescence represent significant potential for the creation of new green, dense, mixed-use neighborhoods well connected to public transport. The regeneration of these neglected urban sites into resilient riverside neighborhoods draws both on their shared and distinctive characteristics, as well as on dimensions that are simultaneously technical and experiential.Accordingly, through a research-by-design approach, the potential of Rhodanie urbaine lies not only in its contribution to the ecological transition in the broadest sense, but also in the new opportunities it offers for enhancing urban resilience through the appropriate transformation of its riverbanks.
