Delhi Police has arrested members of the building owner's family, while the MCD has suspended five officials over the tragedy.Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose on Monday attacked the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Delhi over the Satya Niketan building tragedy, alleging a "total collapse" of everyday governance in the national capital. Her remarks came a day after the around 30-year-old five-storey structure near Delhi University's South Campus, which housed a paying guest (PG) accommodation, came crashing down while repair work was underway, killing seven people and injuring several others.Rescue agencies have so far pulled out 12 people from the debris, while the exact number of people trapped remains unknown."No city exemplifies the total collapse of everyday governance more starkly than New Delhi -- ruled by the BJP's 'triple engine' -- the MCD, state and Centre," Ghose, a Rajya Sabha MP, said on X."Deadly fires, overflowing streets, everyday heinous crimes against women. And now, the shocking collapse of a college hostel building, tragically claiming the lives of young students and leaving others critically injured," she said.Ghose alleged that the government was suffering from a "fatal failure" and "simply unable to govern".She said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was more focused on his "personality cult, Instagram reels, and social-media virality" than on strengthening administrative systems and ensuring public safety."Modi is so addicted to his personality cult, Instagram reels, and social-media virality that the Modi-Rekha Gupta-MCD triple engine regime has no interest or even the capacity to strengthen administrative systems or ensure basic public safety," Ghose said."The BJP 'triple engine' is systematically destroying India's national capital," she alleged."Less photo ops, more real work is what Delhi-ites desperately need," she said. The NDRF on Monday said the exact number of people trapped under the debris was not known. NDRF Inspector General Narendra Bundela said the force was using cutters, hydraulic jacks and canine teams to search for signs of life, with the rescue operation expected to continue through the day.The building housed a boys' PG accommodation. Local residents had earlier raised concerns about the structural safety of other buildings in the locality, where several residential properties have been converted into student accommodations. We are now learning that the MCD itself has admitted that the building was constructed in a zone where so many floors were not permitted. It was a high-occupancy PG, yet there was no approved building plan. Despite this, the PG was still operating. Now, we are seeing two layers of failure here. The first is the immediate failure: illegal construction took place, safety norms were not followed, and these norms were not enforced by the MCD or other local agencies. The second layer of failure is the structural failure. There is a huge student population around the Delhi University campus, yet an unregulated private PG economy continues to operate in the area, with virtually no enforcement. The required regulations are not being followed. These two layers of failure are being seen repeatedly across the country, not just in Delhi. As a result, the infrastructure available for students has, in a way, completely collapsed.”BJP MP Ajay Bhatt on Haldwani ‘purification’ rowBJP MP Ajay Bhatt says, "The BJP does not discriminate based on caste, religion, class, or sect. Such claims are completely wrong and are merely intended to spread misconceptions; the BJP has never entertained such thoughts. Wherever elections approach, the Congress stir up a controversy and then vanishes. The BJP has absolutely no connection to this matter, so I fail to understand why you are insisting on linking us to it. As for whether a 'purification' ritual took place, I am not aware of any such thing happening.
