HOUSTON — Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo exited Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros with a contusion after being struck in the head on the basepaths by a line drive from teammate Ketel Marte.Perdomo remained under observation following Arizona’s 3-2 victory, but manager Torey Lovullo said he had not entered into the concussion protocol. Lovullo said team trainers told him Perdomo never lost consciousness on the field.“We feel like we dodged a bullet,” Lovullo told reporters. “Early lineup for tomorrow, I have him as our starting shortstop. Real good sign.”Perdomo, who singled to open the third inning, was hit while in a secondary lead between first and second base. Because the baseball struck Perdomo in fair territory, he was automatically ruled out.
Marte’s line drive exited his bat at 93 mph and appeared to glance off the left side of Perdomo’s head.“I have never seen that,” Lovullo said of the freak circumstance. “The ball had a little top spin on it, and he thought he could get under it and keep moving. It just kept tracking and hit him.”
