The NFL announced its gift to Roger Goodell for his 20th work anniversary this week: another four years.Goodell, the most powerful person in North American sports, has inked another contract extension as the league’s commissioner, the league announced Sunday. The 67-year-old now has a deal through the 2030 season, which coincides with the expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement.Salary terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Goodell has reportedly pulled in upwards of $60 million per year previously. Any increase — not to mention other perks like healthcare and private plane travel — would put Goodell above the highest-paid players in the league he presides over.The NFL’s compensation committee, chaired by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, worked with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a contract that “aligns Roger’s compensation with the league’s long-term interests and success,” according to a memo sent to teams obtained by The Athletic.Roger Goodell signs contract extensionJonathan Jones“To that end,” the memo reads, “the agreement is heavily performance based, with more than 95 percent of the total compensation tied to Roger’s and the NFL’s performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee.“We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years.”This is Goodell’s fifth contract extension — he previously agreed to new deals in 2009, 2012, 2017 and 2023 — since taking over for Paul Tagliabue in September 2006. Goodell’s most recent extension came in 2023, and his previous contract was set to expire in the spring of 2027.Neither Goodell nor the NFL has given any indication of slowing down.With the salary cap breaking the $300 million threshold for the first time, the NFL continues to be king in American sports. The legalization of sports gambling has brought untold billions into the league, and team valuations have more than doubled in less than 10 years.Goodell’s latest extension expires just as the league’s 10-year pact with the union is set to expire. But the league has given every indication it wishes to get a new deal done well ahead of that deadline. At the heart of that deal will be an 18th regular-season game, as well as further international expansion as the league continues to be a dominant global presence.Goodell trails only Pete Rozelle in tenure as NFL commissioner. Rozelle held the post for 29 years before retiring, and Goodell will need several more extensions to catch the legend.Since taking over, Goodell has led the league to new heights in marketability and earnings.The league had roughly $23 billion in revenue in the fiscal year that ended in March 2025, which represented an 8 percent jump from the previous year and put the league on track to surpass $25 billion in revenue by 2027, according to Sportico. That number is significant because in 2010 — when league revenues were around $8 billion — Goodell set a goal of hitting $25 billion by 2027.Under Goodell, the NFL has increased its value in the lucrative media rights market. The NFL is in the middle of 11-year deals with its network and streaming partners that are worth more than $110 billion. In January, government regulators approved ESPN’s billion-dollar acquisition of multiple NFL Media assets, which also gives the NFL a 10 percent ownership stake in the Disney-owned network, which is valued in the billions.Goodell has also been crucial in the NFL’s global outreach. In 2026, the league will play a record nine international games, stretching across four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums.
