The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is slated to take up multiple projects for clearance during its Monday’s meeting including on routine overhaul of 40 SU-30MKI fighter jets which are mainstay of India Air Force (IAF) fleet.The proposal of the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for overhaul of 40 SU-30MKI aircraft, which are of Soveit origin, has come for the DAC approval owing to involvement of a sizeable cost, which if it exceeds certain level, has to be cleared by the Council, sources privy to development said without sharing the value.Last year, 20 SU-30MKI fighters were identified for overhaul and the cost were met by the HAL itself, sources explained.India has an operational fleet of close to 260 such jets also known as Sukhois. The Ministry of Defence had also awarded contract to HAL for production of 12 Su-30MKIs at a cost of ₹13,500 crores in December, 2024.Besides this, proposals from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force will also be taken up for nod.Published on September 6, 2026
