BATON ROUGE, La. — Lane Kiffin was walking across the Tiger Stadium field early Sunday morning when he was asked if he expected it to go like that.51-10. Worst loss of Dabo Swinney’s coaching career. Worst Clemson loss since 2002.“I thought it would be 35-7 or something like that,” Kiffin said. “I didn’t know they’d be that dysfunctional on offense.”Dysfunctional is not a word that has been used to describe the Clemson program in Swinney’s 18-year tenure. Stubborn and stuck in the past have been thrown around, but Swinney has started to change and engage the transfer portal, bringing in 15 transfers this offseason after adding four the year before and zero in 2024.But the slippage of Swinney’s program, how far it has to go, how irrelevant it is becoming, was on sad display Saturday night in the other Death Valley. It would’ve been one thing to lose by a couple of touchdowns, maybe not a close game but still doing some things well, showing some real signs of hope. It was quite another to lose like that, doing nothing well, trailing 31-3 at halftime, looking at the stat sheet and seeing yourself out-gained 644-145. Earlier in the week, Swinney called LSU pursuing former pro players “embarrassing” for the state of the game. After the most lopsided loss of his head-coaching career, he had to use the same word to describe his team’s performance.“We got our ass kicked,” Swinney said. “It’s an embarrassing performance, coaching and playing. We have to own that. But we can’t let that lead to another loss because you have another team rolling in next week.”Dabo Swinney, Clemson are the biggest losers from Week 1Manny NavarroThat would be Georgia Southern, which Clemson, as bad as it looked Saturday, should still beat. The Tigers may also be favored against North Carolina and at California, and they could be 3-1 when Miami comes rolling into Clemson on Oct. 3. One can squint at Clemson’s full schedule and assume some improvement, expecting a respectable record.But a College Football Playoff trip? For a team that lost 51-10? It would probably take winning the next 11 games or winning the ACC, and that would require having a functional offense. And a quarterback. Which remains the hang-up for the former national power in upstate South Carolina.When he won national titles in 2016 and 2018, Swinney had two generational quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, and they were his starters in five of the six straight College Football Playoff trips from 2015 to 2020.Swinney hasn’t had a great quarterback since then. He has been to one Playoff since, and Clemson went one-and-done in 2024. They are averaging 5.2 players drafted in the five years since then.The worrisome sign might have been that Clemson had nine players drafted after last season, despite going 7-6. Swinney turned to the portal, with three transfers who started in the secondary Saturday night.The traditional high school recruiting has slipped, too. While Clemson’s high school recruiting classes didn’t always rank among the very elite in the pre-portal era, it had six top-10 classes from 2015 to 2022 and ranked 11th in the 247Sports Composite in 2023 and 2024. It was 26th in 2025 and 20th this past cycle.Swinney has built and, until recently, maintained a program with a solid roster and strong culture. But the great years were with great quarterbacks. And it looks like he’s going through another season without one.Clemson awarded Christopher Vizzina the starting job last week, after a stronger-than-expected competition with freshman Tait Reynolds. Both were overwhelmed on Saturday, and Swinney didn’t commit to who would start going forward.As for once-and-again offensive coordinator Chad Morris, back in the role after a dozen years away, Swinney bluntly assessed his return: “Obviously not good. … He’ll get them better. But tonight was not what we hoped for nor expected.”There were inevitable comparisons made between how Swinney and Kiffin built their rosters. When Swinney was asked about it, the question did not mention money, but he brought it up, though he started by not making it an excuse.“No, it’s football; we didn’t do football stuff well,” Swinney said. “We’ve got to be better in things we can control. Give them credit. I won’t sit around and judge other people on what their resources are or what they can do, whatever, it is what it is. It’s our job to be the best we can be with what we have. It’s my job to get us better.”How long that remains his job is on plenty of minds now, inside and outside Clemson. This wasn’t a make-or-break season for Swinney. He has earned the credibility to show some improvement and show people the arrow is pointing back up for Clemson.The problem for Swinney is that the buttons he keeps pushing on offense keep failing. He starts taking transfers, and it’s still not enough. Miami races past him as an ACC contender, and programs like SMU, Virginia and Louisville look like they could too if Swinney doesn’t figure it out.That shouldn’t be happening.A year ago, Swinney lost by 7 to LSU. A year later, he lost by 41.There’s most of a season left. It may turn out Saturday was more about LSU being great than Clemson being bad. Throw in all your caveats.But in a season where Clemson needs to show it’s headed in the right direction, in an opener where fans were looking for hope, Clemson could not have looked worse. And if an opener can instantly drain hope away, that one did.
