Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will meet with the boss of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) after reports emerged the Indian-owned carmaker was set to lay off as many as 4,000 workers.
According to the BBC and Sunday Times, Britain’s largest car manufacturer informed employees and their union about the cuts on Saturday, ahead of the formal announcement of major redundancy programme on Monday.
The news comes at a sensitive moment for the Government in light of Andy Burnham’s vow to “safeguard sovereign manufacturing” and with preparations underway for October’s Budget.
While the Government is facing union calls to “mitigate” any job losses, challenging business conditions may present a significant hurdle for the Prime Minister as he steps up efforts to reindustrialise Britain.
