Emmanuel Nnamani, chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), has urged Nigerians, particularly taxpayers and business owners, to familiarises themselves with the provisions of the tax laws to avoid unnecessary disputes between tax authorities and taxpayers.
Nnamani made the call during a press briefing to mark his three years in office as chairman of ESIRS, where he also highlighted the agency’s revenue performance and reforms introduced under his administration.
He said that a proper understanding of the tax laws would strengthen the relationship between taxpayers and the revenue service while helping individuals and businesses understand when they are liable to pay taxes.
Giving an account of his administration’s performance, Nnamani said the state’s internally generated revenue increased from N37 billion in 2023 to N180.5 billion in 2024 and N406.7 billion in 2025.
According to him, the remarkable increase was driven by Peter Mbah’s administration’s focus on disruptive innovation, greater autonomy for the revenue service, technology deployment and reforms that created a centralised system for revenue collection.
