Cal got the capacity crowd at Memorial Stadium it wanted for coach Tosh Lupoi's debut game.But the Bears couldn't deliver a victory, falling 45-24 to UCLA in the Joe Roth Memorial Game on Saturday night. The game was tied ar 24-all with less than 9 minutes left before the Bears came apart.Lupoi offers his immediate thoughts in the video aboe during his post-game news conference.Cal is coming off a 7-6 season in former coach Justin Wilcox's final season. Lupoi brought in 32 players from the transfer portal, including RB Adam Mohammed (Washington), WR Chase Hendricks (Ohio U), Ian Strong (Rutgers) and TE Dorian Thomas (New Mexico).The Bruins were 3-9 last year and unveil their own coach tonight in Bob Chesney, who led James Madison into the College Football Playoff last year.DEPTH CHART (NOT REALLY): On the lineup card provided reporters in the press box, we usually see a two-deep chart for both teams. Tonight we are greeted by something less than that. Cal issued a lineup list that doesn't distinguish between starters or second-team players. For instance, there are 12 offensive lineman stacked without position or designation as starter or not. Same thing in the secondary, where 11 players are listed as defensive backs, but not separated by cornerback or safety. UCLA, meanwhile, didn't even bother to give us that. First downs are 7-3 for Cal. JKS is 7 for 11 for 79 yards with a touchdown. A pass interference penalty against the Bruins got Cal a first-and-goal at the 9, but they went backward from there. RB Carter Vargas was helped off the field on the play prior to the field goal, apparently with a left leg or knee injury. He was taken to the injury tent. Cal 10, UCLA 710:19 2nd Q: UCLA running back Anthony Woods bounces off the pile, squirms loose and races 31 yards to the end zone and the Bruins have their first lead of the night. UCLA went 75 yards in just five plays, picking up first downs on four of the five snaps. The Bruins are averaging 8.5 yards per play so far. UCLA 14, Cal 103:23 2nd Q: The Bruins knife through the Cal defense again, going 76 yards in nine plays with Wayne Knight scoring on a third-and-2 run from the 8. Two holding penalties against UCLA made no difference. The Bruins are averaging 10 yards per rushing attempt and have totaled 151 yards on just 14 plays their past two series. UCLA 21, Cal 100:13 2nd Q: JKS rolls to his right and finds TE Mason Mini in the end zone for an 8-yard TD. Sagapolutele had completions of 49 yards to Ian Strong and 30 yards to Chase Hendricks during a drive that began with 51 seconds left after Kingston Lopa's interception at the 13-yard line. Cal has just 34 net yards rushing, including 2 sacks, and is averaging 1.8 yards per rush. O-looked good early, but not getting much push on runs since the first series. Sagapolutele, facinf a third-and-8 from his own 18, rolled left and threw down the sideline to Ian Strong. The ball skipped off his hands and was picked off by UCLA defensive back Ta'Shawn James. The interception was the first by JKS after 211 consecutive attempts dating back to last season, setting a Cal record. One play later, Wayne Knight dashed 31 yards into the end zone.
