From the moment that Collin Klein was named the coach of K-State, there has been an added excitement in Manhattan about the upcoming season. There is plenty to be excited about, as quarterback Avery Johnson is entering his third year as the starting quarterback at K-State.The opposing team today is Nicholls, which is coming off a 44-10 victory against Mississippi Valley State in Week 0. The Colonels were in complete contol of the game from the very beginning, and the game was never in doubt.Fans should expect a huge victory for the Wildcats, but the offensive line is a new group that is dealing with a ton of injury issues. Johnson was 3-for-4 with 41 yards and that score, and with that passing touchdown, he set a school-record with 49 passing touchdowns for his career.11:03: Just as good as the K-State offense was on the first drive, the defense was equally impressive with a quick three-and-out forced.6:59: Johnson for Heisman! Maybe a little premature, but Johnson looks very good with his former offensive coordinator, Collin Klein, calling things. The second drive of the year ends similarly, except Johnson caps it off with a 10-yard run to extend the lead. Then, the Wildcats get fancy with a 2-point conversion by Linkon Cure. K-State 15, Nicholls 0.6:07: The defense has come to play in this game, and once again forces another punt. Johnson and the offense are rolling, and get the ball back with a chance to go up three scores.2:24: The offense stalls out as Johnson throws an incompletion on third down. However, it is the special teams stepping up right now, with Simon McClannan pinning Nicholls at the six-yard line with a 42-yard punt.0:29: K-State defense is rolling, and then Brandon White delivers with a 65-yard punt return. All K-State as the Wildcats lead 22-0.Second Quarter14:44: The K-State defense continues its impressive start, as the Wildcats once again force a punt.13:58: First mistake of the season by K-State, as running back Jay Harris fumbles the ball to give the ball back to Nicholls.13:32: The defense is still dominating the ball, as another Colonels drive ends in just 26 seconds and the Wildcats will once again get the ball.10:09: The Oklahoma State transfer portal acquisition of Wendell Gregory got a lot of the talk, but Rodney Fields Jr. delivered with a 26-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 29-0.5:48: Nicholls finally sustains a drive, going 11-plays, 60 yards and the Colonels get their first points of the game on a Kingston Phan field. K-State 29-3.1:58: Johnson has been clicking all night, and he continued it with another touchdown. This time, he found running back Joe Johnson for a 43-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 36-3.Halftime: K-State 36-3. For Klein and his team,that first half was about as good as you could hope for in the first game. Johnson had a fantastic first half, as he was 10-of-15 for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He was in control of the offense, and most importantly, wasn't sacked one time. Fields looks like the No. 1 running back, as he has 12 carries for 95 yards in the first half.The defense outside of one drive was dominant.and the special teams once again looks like a strength for K-State. Third Quarter12:17: Nicholls State is able to get one first down, but that is it as the K-State offense once again is able to get a third down stop and get off the field.8:28: In what could be the final drive for Avery Johnson, he delivers another touchdown, this time to Josh Manning to extend the lead to 43-3.7:51: It has been a struggle all night for Nicholls, and that continued as a fumble gives the Wildcats the ball deep in Colonels' territory.5:52: Johnson is done for the night, as Blake Barnett is now in at quarterback. Joe Jackson does the majority of the work on that drive and scores from 11 yards out for his second touchdown of the night. K-State 50, Nicholls 3.2:08: Another stop by the K-State defense, and the offense once again goes down and scores as Jay Harris scored on an 11-yard run.0:36: The Colonels can't get out of their own way, as a snap over the quarterback's head puts them in a tough spot, forcing another punt.Fourth Quarter13:19: It is now four K-State running backs with a touchdown, as Monterrio Elston Jr. goes 46 yards for a touchdown.8:02: Offense is inching towards a historic night, as Jacob Knuth joins the scoring party with a two-yard touchdown run to push the score to 71-3.Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
