Renowned multi-faceted sculptor A. Kiran Subbaiah shared his artistic journey and experiences with students and art enthusiasts during an interaction organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture in Mysuru on Saturday.Speaking as the special guest at the ‘Interaction with achievers’ programme, Mr. Subbaiah spoke about his journey as a sculptor and his passion for traditional art forms.Originally from Madikeri, Mr. Subbaiah was born, brought up and educated in Mysuru, which he later made his karmabhoomi. During his college days, he was deeply inspired by the exquisite sculptures at the temples of Belur and Halebidu, which inspired him to pursue his dream of becoming a sculptor.In his early years, nature, photographs, and paintings and sculptures published in newspapers and magazines served as his teachers. He later mastered the techniques of handling tools and equipment used in sculpture at the Chamarajendra Government Vocational School, now known as CAVA.Although he discontinued his formal degree education midway due to circumstances, he continued his artistic journey with determination. He even gave up a job opportunity that came his way to pursue art full-time.Having created more than 500 multi-faceted sculptures, Mr. Subbaiah has carved out a distinctive place for himself in the world of sculpture. His 135-headed Adishesha and its pedestal is regarded as one of his outstanding creations.He has also converted a portion of his residence into the K.S. Museum of Sculpture, where he displays his works and provides young artists an opportunity to draw inspiration from sculpture.A distinctive feature of his sculptures is their multi-dimensional character. His works reveal different forms when viewed from different directions, making them unique from every angle.In recognition of his contribution to art, several organisations have honoured him. Mr. Subbaiah has also received the Kodava Sahitya Academy Award and the Shilpakala Academy Award instituted by the Government of Karnataka.Dean of Chamarajendra Government College of Visual Arts A.
