Any fantasy draft in which you have already participated was merely practice — a sparring session ahead of the marquee event. I realize you might consider those leagues to be legitimate, but no. Sorry. This weekend, things get real.Traditionally, the most serious leagues hold their drafts as close to opening week as possible. We want all camp injuries behind us, all position battles resolved and all disciplinary matters settled. Control the controllables and whatnot. We need as much certainty as we can get before the chaos begins. If the summer’s final (and biggest) draft weekend somehow snuck up on you, please don’t panic. We have you covered. Everything you need is right here in one email, as it will be every Saturday this season. Keep scrolling! This article is from The Athletic’s NFL newsletter. Someone forgot to turn them off. Let’s review the early-round fantasy picks who aren’t quite right, but also aren’t ruled out:RB Ashton Jeanty (LV) and his ankle seem to improve with every update, so that’s great. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak is officially optimistic about Jeanty’s availability for the opener against Miami. PHEW. The second-year back has really taken us on a journey over the past two weeks, but he’s clearly progressing.RB Jeremiyah Love (ARI) has been jogging lightly at Cardinals practices, but we don’t have any firm commitments on his return from the high-ankle sprain suffered in preseason play. Ideally, he would be better than 50/50 to face the Chargers. A certain level of absolute dread mild concern is warranted.WR Rome Odunze and RB D’Andre Swift (CHI) were both dinged in the final padded practice of the preseason for the Bears, which is not ideal. Odunze reportedly wanted to return to the field, a positive sign. Swift was in “significant discomfort,” according to The Athletic’s Dan Wiederer, but early reports suggest he was battling a cramp.RB TreVeyon Henderson (NE) hasn’t practiced since injuring his ankle Aug. 24, and, well … he’s running out of time. This man has a game Wednesday night. At no point have we been led to believe the injury was worrisome, but this is yet another situation worth monitoring.WRs Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins (CIN) have been wrapped in bubbles and rested this week as they deal with minor knee and heel issues, but there’s no concern about their opening week status, according to Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor. Nothing to see here.RB Jonathon Brooks (CAR) is believed to be on track to play in Carolina’s season opener against Chicago, but it’s disconcerting to learn his availability is even a question. Brooks is dealing with soreness of an unspecified nature. He’s attempting to become one of the very few athletes to successfully return from multiple tears of the same ACL.TE George Kittle (SF) has landed in Australia ahead of Thursday’s matchup with the Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This isn’t quite confirmation that The People’s Tight End will be active, but it’s still terrific news. Kittle tore his right Achilles less than eight months ago and, incredibly, it may not cost him a regular-season game.WR Emeka Egbuka (TB) has been limited to individual work while recovering from a toe injury that no one seems willing to classify as “turf toe,” although it’s probably turf toe-adjacent. We need to pay attention to his practice participation next week.WR Malik Nabers (NYG) and the Giants are pretty clearly not making any hard commitments on opening week just yet. Nabers has been honest to a fault in public comments about his recovery from ACL surgery. He’s participating in team drills, and there’s no question he’s close.
