KATHMANDU — The death toll from devastating flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to 1,375, while 5,531 people remain missing 10 days after the disaster struck, according to official figures released Saturday.Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 1,344 people had been confirmed dead, while 5,000 remained missing, including 589 foreigners.On the Chinese side, authorities reported at least 31 deaths and 531 people missing in the Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet.Combined official figures from Nepal and China indicate that 850 foreigners are among those still missing.The disaster began on Aug. 26 when a glacier on Nepal's Mount Langtang Lirung fractured at an altitude of about 5,200 meters (17,060 feet).The collapse triggered an ice-and-rock avalanche that developed into a massive debris flow, sweeping through valleys along the Nepal-China border.Floodwaters and mudslides devastated Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre districts, as well as parts of the Kathmandu Valley.Across the border, the disaster also buried the Gyirong border crossing in Xizang.
