A seven-year-old boy died during a dahi handi celebration in Mumbai on Saturday (September 5, 2026), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said.The deceased was identified as Rudra Kadam, who was declared dead at Malvani General Hospital in Mumbai’s Malad Suburb. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. during a local dahi handi celebration at Ekta Welfare Society in Malad (West).The young Govindas, the name used for people celebrating dahi handi, were forming human pyramids on Saturday (September 5, 2026) when a brick column to which the curd pot was attached collapsed on the victim, causing a head injury, according to the BMC.The Dahi Handi is an integral part of the Janmashtami festivities, marking the birth of Lord Krishna. People come together to form human pyramids as high as 10 tiers to break earthen pots filled with curd. During the attempts to break the pots, a troupe of Govindas is likely to collapse, leaving them injured. At least 168 injuries were reported during dahi handis from across the city on Saturday (September 5, 2026) with several undergoing treatment in various hospitals.In a statement released on Friday (September 4, 2026), the BMC said that they have prepared 100 beds at civic hospitals in the city and suburbs for treating injured Govindas. On Friday night (September 4, 2026), the death of a 45-year-old woman identified as Salma Salauddin Pathan was recorded in Pune after a temporary iron frame erected for a dahi Handi event collapsed on her.
