An umpire told a Cardinals rookie pitcher to fix his hat. Moments later, manager Oli Marmol was ejected

During the St. Louis Cardinals’ 7-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday, home-plate umpire Doug Eddings ejected Cardinals manager Oli Marmol in the bottom of the sixth inning. Marmol had a unique explanation for the on-field conflict.“Some words exchanged there. Quite honestly, I thought it was pretty embarrassing on his end,” Marmol said on the Cardinals’ broadcast. “We have a kid making his debut, and in between an at-bat, he tells him that he needs to fix his hat and, ‘The kid’s not going to wear his hat like that on my field.’ Last I checked, this is Coors Field, so I took issue with it.”The player making his first major-league appearance was reliever Hancel Rincon, whom the Cardinals called up from Triple-A Memphis on Sept. 1. While Rincon faced Cole Carrigg in the sixth inning, Eddings halted the game with the count 2-0 and motioned to Cardinals catcher Leo Bernal, and Rincon adjusted his cap.

After the next batter, Connor Norby, hit a single, Marmol replaced Rincon with Justin Bruihl. While Bruihl was warming up, a visibly angry Marmol approached Eddings and appeared to adjust his cap. Not only did Eddings eject Marmol, but he also called a pitch-clock violation that gave Rockies designated hitter Troy Johnston a 1-0 count to start his at-bat against Bruihl.
