Sir, – Ireland continues to export alumina to Russia while Russian missiles and drones rain down on Ukrainian cities. Remarkably, these exports have increased significantly since 2022. (“Aughinish Alumina’s exports to Russia continue to rise”, September 1st). Alumina produces aluminium, a strategic material widely used in missiles, rockets and drones. The Government’s exercise in tracing holding companies, ownership structures and ultimate recipients bears little relationship to the reality: the alumina is going to Russia, where Ireland cannot control its ultimate use.Meanwhile, Ireland bears the environmental cost of producing it, including vast quantities of potentially hazardous bauxite residue beside the Shannon Estuary.We cannot condemn Russia’s bombing of Ukraine while supplying it with a strategic raw material.
