Nigeria’s U-20 men’s handball team will begin their quest for continental glory against two-time champions Algeria at the 33rd African Men’s Junior Nations Championship in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Saturday.
The Nigerians compete with confidence after winning the IHF Trophy Africa Zone 3 title in April, defeating Benin Republic 39-29 in the final.
However, the continental championship presents a tougher challenge for coach Emmanuel David’s side, who are drawn in Group B alongside Algeria, Angola and Madagascar. Nigeria’s opening clash with Algeria will be followed by games against Angola and Madagascar as the young Handball Stars battle for a place in the knockout stages.
The competition, which runs from September 5 to 12, also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 IHF Men’s Junior World Championship, making Nigeria’s campaign particularly significant.
